Ikea hack

I wanted to incorporate a reading area for my daughter's room and I was so inspired to do an Ikea hack that I found on Pinterest.

I must've waited at least 2 months until Ikea finally had a Bekvam Spice rack in stock. A solid birch wood, it can be sanded and painted or left as is - whatever you prefer. And for the price of $3.99 it's such a deal!

What you'll need:
  • Ikea Bekvam Spice Rack
  • Sand paper
  • Spray paint
  • Leveling tool
  • Drywall anchor with screws
  • Screw driver
  • Hammer

Assemble the spice rack as instructed
Sand them and wipe the wood dust off
Apply paint, Let dry.
Install drywall anchors for good support
Spaced a foot a part
And Enjoy!

This project took me 2 days to complete which isn't bad at all considering I changed the color three times. I originally bought pink paint, tested it out and I didn't like it. Then painted it purple and still I was unhappy with the color, Finally I decided to go with Green apple since I just bought a green and white curtain for her closet and also to somewhat match with her bright green carpet.

Mikaela's room update

OK. So, here's 1 month after progress for Mikaela's room and it is about 80% done.

Carpet from Target and the rest from Ikea.

wall decal from Target and TV still needs to be mounted on the wall

I received my Parenting Magazine for the month of May and I saw the Offspring/My Space on page 28 and I have the same inspiration as seen on my last blog. Pretty close to what I currently have set up in my daughter's room. I still have to put the pennants up, put 3 book shelves on the wall and decorate the wall where the TV will be placed and that should complete it.

And she loves it!

Mikaela's room progress

My husband and I finally finished painting Mikaela's room over the weekend. Mikaela's fave color is purple and she actually picked the color herself. Today, I couldn't wait for my husband to put together the bed frame so I did it myself. It was fairly easy, we bought a Minnen bed frame from Ikea. I love this bed frame because it is adjustable, low, and it is pretty sturdy. It fits a twin size mattress or Ikea's adjustable mattress. Room currently a work in progress, will update as soon as this project is complete.

Play-dough Recipe

What you'll need:
1 cup flour
1/2 cup salt
1 cup water
2 tablespoons oil
2 tablespoons cream of tartar
Beet juice, carrot juice or food coloring

Mix all the dry ingredients and slowly add oil and water.
Cook over medium heat, stirring until dough becomes stiff.
Place dough on wax paper and let cool.
Knead the play-dough with your hands,
You may dust with flour if the dough is too sticky.
Divide into balls and add a few drops of the juice or food coloring as desired for colors.
Tada! You've made a non-toxic play dough for your tot.
The smell is tolerable but if you'd like to add a sweet scent, perhaps try a teaspoon or 2 of vanilla extract.

Lunar Eclipse

My view of the Total Lunar Eclipse from San Diego,CA

What is a Lunar Eclipse?

A lunar eclipse takes place when the moon, following its orbit around us, passes directly behind Earth as seen from the sun.
The next scheduled Total Lunar Eclipse will be on April 15, 2014

Sugar Cookies

Ingredients
2 cups all-purpose flour
1/4 teaspoon salt
1/2 teaspoon baking powder
1/2 cup (1 stick) unsalted butter
1 cup sugar
1 large egg, lightly beaten
2 tablespoons brandy, or milk
1/2 teaspoon pure vanilla extract
Royal Icing, optional

Directions
Whisk together flour, salt, and baking powder in a medium bowl; set aside. In the bowl of an electric mixer fitted with the paddle attachment, cream butter and sugar; mix until light and fluffy. With mixer running, add egg, brandy, and vanilla; mix until well combined. With the mixer on low, slowly add reserved flour mixture. Mix until just combined.

Transfer dough to a work surface. Shape into 2 discs, cover with plastic wrap, and refrigerate for at least 1 hour.
Preheat oven to 350 degrees. Line baking sheets with nonstick baking mats or parchment paper; set aside.

On a lightly floured work surface, roll out dough to 1/8-inch thickness. Cut into desired shapes, and transfer to prepared baking sheets, leaving an inch in between. Leftover dough can be rolled and cut once more. Bake until lightly golden, about 10 minutes; do not allow to brown.

Transfer to wire racks to cool.

Decorate with Royal Icing & Sprinkles, optional.
